Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
